Blue

A Heeler lover notified me of Blue and his need for a rescue from a Dallas kill shelter. When I called to tag him, his sister had already been euthanized, and he was in the medical room about to be euthanized. They put me on hold, to run down and stop the procedure so that Blue could be rescued.

Blue came to Hooey’s Heelers Rescue & Sanctuary last year and had pneumonia, hookworms and heartworms.  He recovered from his pneumonia and hookworms several weeks after he arrived at the rescue. Once those two issues were resolved we started on the heartworm treatment which lasts 6-8 weeks and his exercise was very limited. We had a few short walks every day so he could be outside, potty and explore. Of course, this 6–8-week period was during the snowiest months in Colorado. Finally, he was negative for heartworms and after he had been through all of that, to add insult to injury, he was finally healthy enough to be neutered. Poor Blue! The cone only lasted a day, and he healed up from that surgery in no time. Blue is now 4 years old, weighs about 50 lbs., is happy, healthy, up to date on all his vaccines, micro-chipped and looking for a family that will love him and cherish him. He is potty-trained with a doggy door and gets along well with other dogs unless the other dog is a strong alpha. He loves walks and we are working on his leash training now. He is hesitant to get into a vehicle, I believe he was traumatized by being dumped at the shelter and associates riding in a vehicle with bad outcomes. I can’t imagine how he felt being dumped in a strange place without his person, getting sicker and sicker, and taken into a medical room to be euthanized. Although he may not have understood why he was in that room, it was still a new scary place, with weird smells and no one that truly cared or loved him by his side. Now, he is healthy and strong, loving his life, his treats and exploring. Although apprehensive to ride in a car, he does fine traveling and is making progress with his apprehension about vehicles. If you are looking for a hiking partner, best friend, funny companion and a lovable addition to your family, Blue may be the right dog for you.
