About

My husband, Doug, has had Heelers around him his whole life, but the breed was new to me. He was going to get one for his son and I was apprehensive. I was worried he would bond so strongly with his son that the dog would be aggressive to me. He assured me that would not be the case and he and his son went and picked out a puppy. We named him Hooey.

As he grew older and bigger we realized he was definitely mixed with something, but we didn’t know what. He was the sweetest puppy. As he matured, he picked me as his person. I felt very lucky and blessed that he had chosen me. We spent all our time together and he slept in our bedroom with us. I had never been closer to a dog before in my life or felt such a connection.

Unfortunately, Hooey left this world too early for me and I still long for his companionship. After I lost Hooey, I became aware of how many Heelers are in need of being rescued and saved from being euthanized. The stories touched me and some just broke my heart. I wanted to make a difference, no matter how small. I rescued one for myself that was being put down. After that I decided to set up a rescue in Hooey’s name to honor his memory and rescue more Heelers. Just in case you are wondering, Doug’s son adopted another Heeler that picked him.
